Staten Island faces some of the highest cancer rates in New York City, and cancer remains the second‑leading cause of death for its residents. Staten Island University Hospital’s (SIUH) Florina Cancer Center serves approximately 30,000 hematology and oncology patients each year, providing a vital lifeline across the borough. To expand its capacity and enhance comprehensive care – including services through its Children’s Center, Comprehensive Breast Center, and urologic oncology program – Northwell Health launched a major expansion of the existing cancer center to better meet community needs.
What challenges did STV address?
The project required modernizing and enlarging a fully operational cancer treatment facility without disrupting essential care. SIUH needed to increase infusion capacity, improve patient and family experience and add new clinical and staff support spaces, all while integrating the expansion into a constrained and highly active hospital campus. The work also had to align with Northwell Health’s broader capital improvement program to transform the 17‑acre North Campus.
What solutions did STV deliver?
STV provided comprehensive program management services for the new state‑of‑the‑art expansion, which included a two‑story overbuild and gut renovation of the existing first floor. The reimagined facility features 27 new adult infusion spaces and six pediatric infusion bays, along with renovated employee office space. STV managed budget, schedule and stakeholder coordination, while overseeing all owner‑supplied FF&E procurement and facilitating medical supply logistics.
How does this project benefit Staten Island?
The expanded cancer center enhances access to high‑quality oncology services for both adult and pediatric patients, strengthening care close to home and reducing the need for travel outside the borough. Northwell Health anticipates a 10% increase in annual appointments, improving early detection, treatment timelines and long‑term outcomes. This project also contributes to the broader modernization of SIUH’s North Campus, ensuring a more resilient and patient‑centered health system for Staten Island.
