Staten Island University Hospital Florina Cancer Center

Staten Island sees some of the highest rates of cancer across New York City boroughs—and cancer is the second-leading cause of death for residents. To that end, Staten Island University Hospital’s (SIUH) Florina Cancer Center diagnoses and treats approximately 30,000 patients with hematology and oncology issues each year. To continue providing comprehensive cancer treatment services through its Children’s Center, Comprehensive Breast Center and urologic oncology facilities, Northwell Health launched an expansion to its existing facility to better support the Staten Island community.

STV provided program management services for the new, state-of-the-art building that included a two-story overbuild and gut renovation of the existing first floor. A new adult patient and an adjacent pediatric care unit features 27 adult infusion spaces and six pediatric infusion bays. The renovation also includes office space for the center’s employees. Northwell Health expects to see a 10% increase in appointments at the new facility in 2024. STV’s team managed the budget, schedule, project team and stakeholders, while also coordinating all owner-supplied furniture, fixtures and equipment (FF&E) procurement and medical supply arrivals.

The new Cancer Center is one part of Northwell Healthcare’s broader capital improvement program to modernize SIUH’s 17-acre North Campus. STV is also the program manager for the capital improvement program, which includes a new medication and surgical unit, as well as the extensive modernization of the labor and delivery unit, OR suite and the hospital’s perioperative facilities, as well as the relocation of its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
