The SunRail Phase 2 Northern Expansion adds 12.2 miles of new commuter rail service between DeBary and DeLand, strengthening Central Florida’s growing transit network. The extension builds on the success of SunRail’s earlier phases and offers a dependable alternative for commuters traveling into downtown Orlando. As part of the Herzog-led design-build team, STV served as the lead designer for all track, structural, electrical and systems improvements across the full 12.2-mile corridor.
What challenges did STV address?
The corridor required new and relocated track, expanded capacity and infrastructure upgrades while maintaining safe operations on the existing Central Florida Rail Corridor. Integrating a new mainline track, adding double‑track sections and upgrading a historic pedestrian tunnel demanded coordinated engineering across active rail, road crossings and environmentally sensitive areas.
What solutions did STV deliver?
STV designed all track elements, including four miles of double-tracking, a new mainline segment and four upgraded roadway crossings. The team fully rehabilitated the pedestrian tunnel at Lake Beresford Park and provided communications and electrical engineering. STV also supported systems integration and service planning to accommodate higher speeds — up to 60 mph for freight and 79 mph for SunRail and Amtrak trains.
How does this project benefit the community?
The extension improves regional connectivity, reduces roadway congestion and increases transit reliability for Central Florida commuters. More frequent service, upgraded infrastructure and safer crossings support sustainable mobility and long‑term growth in Volusia County and the greater Orlando region.
