Huntersville, North Carolina, is the fastest-growing town in Mecklenburg County, and its rapid expansion has placed increasing pressure on the local roadway network. To support downtown redevelopment and provide alternatives to congested travel routes, the Town of Huntersville implemented a $16 million Main Street improvement program. STV provided resident engineering and construction inspection services for the project, which upgrades 1.3 miles of Main Street and enhances mobility for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.
What challenges did STV address?
Main Street serves as a primary north-south connection and had long faced congestion issues intensified by new development and population growth. The project required maintaining access to homes, businesses and utilities while constructing improvements in a constrained corridor. STV also coordinated with Charlotte Water and Norfolk Southern Railway, whose infrastructure and operations intersected with the work zone, requiring precise planning and communication.
What solutions did STV deliver?
STV oversaw roadway construction activities, including the installation of new curbs, sidewalks on both sides of the street and two modern roundabouts designed to improve traffic flow. The team managed contract administration, performed material testing and sampling and coordinated with key stakeholders to keep the project on schedule. STV also monitored construction sequencing to ensure work progressed safely and efficiently with minimal disruption to the community.
How does this project benefit the community?
The improved corridor increases capacity, enhances navigation through downtown Huntersville and provides safer spaces for pedestrians and cyclists. The new roundabouts reduce delays and improve intersection safety, while upgraded sidewalks enhance a more walkable, connected community. The project fulfills a long-standing local vision for an alternative route that eases congestion and supports quality of life in one of North Carolina’s fastest-growing towns.
