US 281/Route 66 Bridgeport Bridge

The William H. Murray “Pony” Bridge – known widely as the Bridgeport Bridge – is a treasured landmark along historic Route 66. Spanning 4,000 feet across the South Canadian River, the 90‑year‑old structure features 38 distinctive 100‑foot pony truss spans that have drawn bridge enthusiasts and travelers from across the globe. After decades of service and evolving traffic patterns, the bridge had become structurally deficient, placing it at risk of closures and restricting heavier vehicles. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) selected STV as the lead designer to deliver a long‑anticipated revitalization that preserves the bridge’s iconic character while ensuring its safety and longevity.

What challenges did STV address?

The aging bridge faced several significant limitations: deteriorating structural components, inadequate load capacity for modern traffic and an increasing risk of disruptions along this important US 281/Route 66 corridor. STV needed to restore structural reliability without compromising the bridge’s signature pony truss aesthetic – an essential component of its historical identity and tourism value. Additionally, the project required solutions that would improve roadway functionality and enhance the visitor experience at this notable heritage site.

What solutions did STV deliver?

STV designed a revitalized structure that maintains the original pony truss appearance while introducing 21st‑century engineering innovations. The team delivered Oklahoma’s first highway bridge featuring full-depth precast concrete deck panels paired with Ultra-High-Performance Concrete (UHPC) joints – dramatically improving durability and construction efficiency. The widened deck safely accommodates increased traffic and new visitor amenities, including a parking lot and viewing area, make it easier for tourists to enjoy the bridge and its surroundings.

How does this project benefit the region?

The revitalized Bridgeport Bridge strengthens a critical regional connection, supports local communities and preserves an iconic piece of American transportation history. Modernized infrastructure ensures safe and reliable travel while improved tourist access boosts economic activity along the Route 66 corridor. By honoring the bridge’s heritage while preparing it for future generations, the project reinforces its role as both a functional asset and a cultural destination.
