Virginia Railway Express Crystal City Station and Amtrak Step-Up Program

Virginia’s I-395/I-95 Commuter Choice Program invests toll revenue from Northern Virginia Expressways into transit and other multimodal projects. To better support Virginia Railway Express’s (VRE) larger goal of enhancing connectivity at its commuter rail stations across the Commonwealth, STV’s helped the agency secure more than $20 million in state grant funds from the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission and Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission for two VRE mobility projects.

$18.8 million was allocated for the construction of a new VRE station in Crystal City, VA. The expansion and relocation of the existing station and platform will allow for simultaneous boarding of train trains while accommodating full-length trains. The project will also prepare the station for a planned fourth track.

The remaining $1.5 million will support the reinstatement of the Amtrak Step-Up program at VRE station along the Fredericksburg Line. The Step-Up program enables VRE multiride ticketholders to ride select Amtrak trains for an additional charge.
