As one of the fastest‑growing commuter rail systems in the country, the Virginia Railway Express is modernizing and standardizing its rail fleet to meet rising ridership demand. To support this effort, VRE retained STV under a mechanical engineering consultant services task order contract to assist with the procurement of new commuter rail cars. The program introduces a new generation of multi‑level vehicles that expand capacity and improve reliability across the system.
What challenges did STV address?
VRE required vehicles that could integrate seamlessly with its existing fleet while offering higher capacity and modernized onboard systems. Procuring multi‑level equipment presented complex engineering considerations, including compatibility with existing infrastructure, operational reliability, safety standards and long‑term maintainability. Oversight of testing, inspections and design reviews was essential to ensure the vehicles met VRE’s performance and durability expectations.
What solutions did STV deliver?
STV developed technical specifications for the new cars and provided bid support during procurement. The team also delivered inspection, testing and commissioning services to ensure each vehicle met contract requirements. STV conducted full design reviews, oversaw manufacturing and testing activities and verified compliance with mechanical, electrical and systems engineering criteria. The result is a fleet of standardized, high‑capacity multi‑level coaches that improve service consistency and accommodate VRE’s continued growth.
How does this project benefit the region?
The new commuter rail cars allow VRE to serve more riders efficiently, improve passenger comfort and strengthen reliability along both the Fredericksburg and Manassas lines. The upgraded fleet enhances daily travel for commuters across Northern Virginia and the greater Washington, D.C. region.
