The Mexican Fruit Fly Rearing Facility at Moore Air Force Base is a crucial U.S. Department of Agriculture scientific facility that prevents the spread of non-native fruit flies. Requiring specialized wastewater management that meets mandated biosafety requirements, the wastewater treatment at the facility and domestic wastewater at the military base exceeded their lifespan.
As part of a task order contract, STV evaluated alternatives for wastewater management at the facility and base, providing design services for the new wastewater facility. The firm also prepared a National Environmental Policy Act Environmental Assessment to determine if there were any significant adverse impacts on the human or natural environment associated with any new facility.
The firm’s design deployed a packaged treatment plant with its effluent discharged to an evaporation pond. The sustainable design minimizes the total wastewater by eliminating stormwater infiltration and inflow. The facility’s treatment technology is energy-efficient, occupies minimal space and reduces adverse environmental impacts.
