STV tunneling and underground infrastructure experts recently shared insights from one of New York City’s most technically complex transit projects in a feature article published by Civil Engineering Source, the American Society of Civil Engineers’ premier industry publication.

Authored by Frank Pepe, PE, M.ASCE, senior vice president and national director of tunneling and geotechnical engineering; Kevin Moon, vice president and geotechnical and tunneling engineering director; Kivanc Oncu, PE, PMP, structural/tunneling senior project manager; and Hamidreza Rezaei, PE, vice president and engineering director, the article examines the engineering challenges behind the recently completed pedestrian tunnel connecting Grand Central Terminal to the No. 7 subway line’s 42nd Street Station.

“New York City Pedestrian Tunnel Pushes Engineering Boundaries,” details how the project team successfully designed and delivered the tunnel beneath one of the world’s busiest transit hubs while maintaining uninterrupted subway service and protecting adjacent historic infrastructure and utilities. The piece highlights the innovative use of sequential excavation methods, advanced 3D modeling and real-time monitoring to navigate Manhattan’s dense underground environment.

“As urban areas continue evolving, projects like this will become increasingly common, requiring engineering approaches that work within existing infrastructure constraints while meeting modern performance requirements.”

STV served as designer and engineer-of-record for the project, integrating geotechnical, structural, architectural and systems design to support construction in an exceptionally constrained setting. The completed tunnel improves passenger circulation and reduces congestion at the Grand Central-42nd Street subway station while enhancing connectivity within Midtown Manhattan’s transit network.
