Three STV Projects Recognized with ACEC NY Engineering Excellence Awards
MTA Accessibility upgrades

STV was honored by the American Council of Engineering Companies of New York (ACEC New York) with three Engineering Excellence Awards. This year’s winners include:

Accessibility Upgrades at Eight MTA Stations: Diamond Award

In the Transportation category, ACEC New York granted a prestigious Diamond Award to the accessibility improvements at eight Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) New York City Transit (NYC Transit) and Staten Island Railway stations. STV served as lead designer for the design-build program that is making stations throughout New York City’s transit network more compliant with the American with Disabilities Act (ADA).

STV’s transit facility experts designed new hydraulic and traction elevators, structural modifications at stations, and upgrades to rail communications and power systems. Making New York City’s transit system more inclusive and accessible is a priority for MTA, as well as STV. STV’s project team recently shared their experience of contributing to the accessibility enhancements and the unique challenges the stations presented.

The Diamond Award makes the project eligible to receive ACEC New York’s Empire Award – its highest honor – at its Engineering Excellence Awards gala in 2025.

Coney Island Rail Yard Resilience: Platinum Award

Coney Island Yard

The Coney Island Rail Yard provides crucial repairs to maintain operations for NYC Transit’s subway system. The transformative resilience upgrades at the complex earned a Platinum Award from ACEC New York. STV led the design of both long- and short-term solutions for the yard, including a new, 5,000-foot-long elevated track cable bridge that protects traction power, communication and fiber optic cables and personnel.

In 2012, Superstorm Sandy flooded the area with 27 million gallons of brackish water and debris. Now, a permanent perimeter protection system and upgraded drainage help to reduce storm impacts on the yard.

Reflecting New York’s commitment to resilience, STV’s multidisciplinary team worked closely with MTA on enacting the agency’s comprehensive resilience program at the site. The project recently earned ENR East’s best airport/transit project for 2024 and a Structural Engineering Excellence award from the Structural Engineers Association of New York.

Bronx Metro-North Station Study Environmental Impact Statement: Gold Award

By 2027, Metro-North is set to open four new train stations in East Bronx. The New York City Department of City Planning’s (NYCDCP) Bronx Metro-North Plan is proposing several land use and rezoning actions to benefit the communities stations in the Hunts Point, Parkchester/Van Nest, Morris Park and Co-Op City neighborhoods. ACEC New York granted its Gold Award to the environmental impact statement (EIS), prepared by STV’s environmental planning team.

STV conducted extensive technical studies of the potential impacts of NYCDCP’s plan upon the communities, including air quality, noise, socioeconomic and more. Reflecting community input, the plan will increase mixed-use development and affordable, mixed-income housing, retail, and other facilities along the new stations. In August 2024, the New York City Council approved the transformative plan that will bring 10,000 new jobs and 7,000 new housing units to combat New York City’s housing shortage.
