Designed by world‑renowned architect I. M. Pei, the Baltimore World Trade Center (WTC) rises 405 feet above the Inner Harbor as the tallest regular pentagonal building in the world. On behalf of the Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Port Administration (MDOT MPA), STV provided on‑call architectural and engineering design services to modernize tenant spaces and building systems throughout the 31‑story landmark. The work enhanced functionality, upgraded infrastructure and improved the everyday experience for the building’s diverse tenants while honoring its historic architectural character.
What challenges did STV address?
The WTC required targeted renovations and modernizations within an occupied, operational high‑rise structure. Each tenant suite presented distinct spatial, mechanical, electrical and compliance needs, and system upgrades had to be woven into a decades‑old building without disrupting daily activity. Improving code compliance, reliability, and user comfort – all while preserving the building’s architectural integrity – was essential.
What solutions did STV deliver?
STV worked in close collaboration with MDOT MPA project managers and tenants to design new suites, expand existing spaces and modernize building-wide systems. The team delivered architectural, interior, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection and structural upgrades across multiple floors. STV also provided task management and cost estimating, as well as rehabilitation of critical building systems including electrical, mechanical and plumbing infrastructure to meet current code and safety standards.
How does this project benefit the region?
By revitalizing a signature building on Baltimore’s skyline, the improvements support long-term tenant satisfaction, operational efficiency and continued economic vitality along the Inner Harbor. The upgrades ensure that this iconic architectural landmark remains a vibrant, safe and modern workspace for organizations across the region.
