Clark-LaSalle/Division Station Red Line Rehabilitation

Originally opened in 1943, the Chicago Transit Authority’s Clark/Division Red Line Station underwent a transformative rehabilitation as part of the city’s $7.3 billion transit infrastructure renewal program. The project modernized the station to improve pedestrian flow, expand capacity and deliver full ADA accessibility. Serving one of the busiest neighborhoods on the North Side, the upgraded station now reflects Chicago’s evolving mobility needs while maintaining continuous transit service throughout construction.

What challenges did STV address?

The aging station struggled with congestion, limited accessibility and outdated mechanical, electrical and communication systems. A constrained urban environment added complexity, requiring careful utility relocations, deep retention installations, and extensive coordination with ongoing city traffic and uninterrupted rail operations. STV’s role was to help manage these challenges while ensuring the station could remain operational during construction.

What solutions did STV deliver?

On behalf of the Chicago Department of Transportation, STV provided comprehensive construction management services for the $43 million, four‑phase rehabilitation. The team oversaw construction of a new 8,800‑square‑foot mezzanine at LaSalle and Division, rehabilitation of the existing mezzanine, upgrades to a 440‑foot subway platform, modernization of elevators and escalators, and installation of enhanced lighting, security, and communication systems. Strategic project staging ensured uninterrupted rail service and street traffic.

How does this project benefit the region?

The renovated Clark/Division Station now offers safer, more intuitive passenger circulation, ADA‑compliant access, and improved system reliability. These upgrades strengthen Chicago’s public transportation network, enhancing mobility for residents, commuters, and visitors while supporting long‑term economic and community vitality.
