Running 62 miles between New Haven, Connecticut and Springfield, Massachusetts, the CTrail Hartford Line provides a reliable rail alternative along the heavily traveled Interstate 91 corridor. The service connects nine stations and includes 27 miles of new second track, passing sidings and five new interlockings. As Connecticut’s newest passenger rail line, the Hartford Line strengthens regional mobility, reduces highway congestion and improves access to jobs, education and entertainment across both states.
What challenges did STV address?
Delivering a new rail service along an active corridor required rebuilding track infrastructure, modernizing stations and upgrading key structures while maintaining safe and continuous rail operations. The work also required comprehensive coordination among state agencies, municipalities and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) to meet design, safety, and compliance requirements.
What solutions did STV deliver?
Serving as a subconsultant to WSP USA, STV provided preliminary design engineering and final design oversight for the $650 million program. The team supported the development of three new stations, along with track work, grade crossing upgrades and bridge and culvert improvements. STV also performed quality assurance and quality control of final designs to ensure compliance with FRA standards and provided construction services to support efficient, timely delivery.
