The Florida Department of Transportation’s State Road A1A Improvements project delivered the final missing segment of the Timucuan Trail between Big Talbot Island Park and Little Talbot Island in Jacksonville. This corridor is part of FDOT’s Shared‑Use Non‑motorized (SUN) Trail network and serves both commuters and recreational users. Before the project, SR A1A lacked a safe, continuous link to the larger 18‑mile trail system that runs through nearby state parks and environmentally sensitive wetlands. As lead designer, STV advanced a program that replaced two bridges and added a new shared-use trail segment, enhancing safety, access and environmental stewardship along this coastal route.
What challenges did STV address?
The project traverses tidal salt marshes and protected wetlands where minimizing environmental impacts is essential. STV needed to design new structures that fit within a low-profile corridor while maintaining resilience against coastal conditions. At the time, FDOT’s now‑common Florida Slab Beams were not standard practice, requiring coordination with the agency to introduce an innovative solution that would reduce construction footprints and impacts to sensitive ecosystems.
What solutions did STV deliver?
STV replaced two bridges using precast, prestressed Florida Slab Beams that reduced superstructure depth and limit disturbance to the marsh. The team also designed a new trail section that closes the final gap in the Timucuan Trail network. STV coordinated directly with FDOT to approve the implementation of this bridge type and delivered a design that balances safety, durability and environmental performance.
How does this project benefit the community?
The upgraded corridor strengthens multimodal transportation by completing a key link for cyclists, pedestrians and tourists. The improved trail connection supports recreation, enhances safety along a heavily traveled route and expands access to one of Florida’s most scenic coastal environments.
