Genesis Dual-Mode Locomotive Procurement

The GE Genesis series II passenger locomotives provided a boost to Metro-North Railroad commuter trains operating between non-electrified territory in New York State and Connecticut and New York City’s Grand Central Terminal. The dual-mode technology allows engineers to seamlessly transition from diesel power to emission-free third-rail power when entering the Park Avenue tunnel into Manhattan.

Metro-North contracted STV to provide project management and engineering assistance for the procurement of these locomotives.

The Genesis II incorporates state-of-the-art technology, including a distributed computer control, an electronic brake system, and sophisticated diagnostics that monitor the locomotive performance. In a remarkable step forward, the operator’s console is equipped with LCDs that provide all vital operating information and allow “touch screen” interrogation of the locomotive system.

A landmark dual-mode locomotive that provides seamless transportation between non-electrified and electrified territory.
