The Global Gateway Connector Bridge is a signature element of the City of College Park’s multi‑use trail expansion, creating a seamless pedestrian and bicycle connection between the city’s historic downtown and the Georgia International Convention Center (GICC). Located just a few hundred feet from Hartsfield‑Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the 200‑foot‑long arch suspension bridge serves as both a functional crossing and a dramatic architectural landmark. The $13.7 million project includes the bridge, supporting walls and adjacent multi‑use trail improvements that strengthen regional walkability and access.
What challenges did STV address?
The project required a bridge structure that could span a four‑lane parkway while meeting AASHTO, ADA and GDOT standards for grade, clearances, loading and safety. With the bridge positioned in a high‑visibility transportation corridor near the airport, the design needed to be visually iconic while maintaining structural efficiency. The project also included MSE approach ramp walls, each requiring coordination of architectural treatments that aligned with the bridge’s signature aesthetic.
What solutions did STV deliver?
As bridge engineer-of-record, STV provided complete structural design, construction documents and construction administration for the arch suspension bridge and its MSE approach walls. The design features twin 80‑foot intersecting steel arch ribs, a suspended deck framed with custom architectural tubular hoops, flared handrails and distinctive fence detailing. STV ensured compliance with all GDOT requirements and guided the project through the GDOT Plan Development Process. The MSE walls were finished with aesthetic façades that complement the bridge’s bold form.
How does this project benefit the community?
The completed bridge significantly improves pedestrian and cyclist mobility by linking downtown College Park with the GICC and regional trail networks. As a new gateway structure, it enhances the city’s visibility, strengthens tourism and convention activity and promotes safer, more accessible travel for residents and visitors.
