The I‑35 Northeast Expansion (NEX) program is a major mobility investment for the San Antonio region, delivered through the North, Central and South projects along a 19.5‑mile corridor. The program introduces two elevated structures that will each carry two general purpose lanes and one high‑occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane in both directions. Designed to support an estimated 130,000 vehicles per day, the improvements aim to enhance safety, reduce congestion and strengthen connectivity for commuters and regional travelers. As the CEI consultant for the North project, STV provides roadway construction inspection, materials testing, project documentation and regulatory compliance for 6.4 miles of the corridor.
What challenges is STV addressing?
The I‑35 corridor in the San Antonio District experiences heavy daily congestion and is a critical link for commuters and freight. The North project involves complex staging to maintain traffic flow while constructing elevated structures with significant footprint constraints. TxDOT also requires rigorous materials testing, documentation and oversight to ensure the project meets statewide standards associated with the Texas Clear Lanes initiative.
What solutions is STV delivering?
STV’s CEI team is supporting the North project through comprehensive inspection, testing and construction documentation services. The team is verifying compliance with specifications and design plans, evaluates contractor work for quality and safety and monitors field activities to support seamless delivery. STV’s oversight is helping ensure that each constructed element meets the structural, operational and regulatory expectations established by TxDOT.
How will this project benefit the community?
Once complete, the I‑35 NEX program will reduce bottlenecks, shorten commute times and provide safer, more reliable travel through one of the region’s busiest areas. The improvements support long‑term economic growth, enhance freight movement and strengthen mobility for residents, workers and visitors.
