I-78 Bridge Parapet Upgrade

Spanning the Delaware River between Pennsylvania and New Jersey, the I-78 toll bridge is an essential link for motorists and is the most heavily traveled toll bridge operated by the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission (DRJTBC).

To increase traveler safety and convenience, STV provided design and engineering services to the DRJTBC, including a concept study, utility coordination, ramp and bridge inspections and a constructability review, for a 2.25-mile roadway segment in Northampton County, PA, as well as toll bridge segments over the Delaware River, I-78 over SR 0611, I-78 over SR 0519, I-78 over Ramp C bridge structure and the Pennsylvania Welcome Center adjacent to the bridge’s toll plaza.

Areas of focus included utilities, lighting and noise barriers. STV also reviewed safety systems, including guide rails, to determine whether they conformed to standards from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, the New Jersey Department of Transportation and AASHTO.

Improving safety and access for motorists over one of the busiest toll bridges between Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
