Moodna and Woodbury Viaducts Rehabilitation

The Moodna and Woodbury Viaducts are two of the most iconic structures in New York’s rail network, carrying freight and commuter trains for more than a century across the forested valleys of Orange County. Metro‑North Railroad selected STV to deliver critical rehabilitation work to extend the life of both structures and support safe, reliable rail operations. STV provided construction support services for the Moodna Viaduct and resident engineering and inspection services for structural repairs to the Woodbury Viaduct, helping modernize these essential links along the Hudson Valley corridor.

What challenges did STV address?

The aging steel trestles required detailed inspection, assessment and load‑rating analysis to determine the most urgent repairs. The Moodna Viaduct, a 3,200‑foot‑long trestle rising 193 feet above the valley floor, is the highest and longest railroad trestle east of the Mississippi River. Working on structures of this scale required specialized field access, safety planning and coordination with active freight and commuter rail operations. STV needed to identify necessary repairs while minimizing service disruptions.

What solutions did STV deliver?

STV conducted a full inspection of both viaducts, developed load ratings and prepared prioritized repair recommendations. The team produced design packages and cost estimates to advance structural repairs, including improvements to the lower chord and floor systems. STV’s resident engineering and inspection staff oversaw construction activities to confirm adherence to design intent, quality standards and safety requirements.

How does this project benefit the community?

The rehabilitation extends the service life of two historic rail structures that support essential daily freight and commuter travel. Strengthened viaducts improve regional reliability, ensure safe operations for passengers and freight customers and preserve landmark structures that have served the Hudson Valley for generations.
