Orangeburg Pedestrian Bridge at South Carolina State University

Rising traffic volumes along Chestnut Street (US 21) in Orangeburg created a serious safety challenge for South Carolina State University students. More than 1,000 students live in residential complexes located across a busy five‑lane roadway from campus, forcing daily crossings at an increasingly hazardous corridor. To support a safer, more connected campus environment, STV provided design and project management services for a new 93‑foot prefabricated pedestrian bridge that now serves as a secure gateway to SC State.

What challenges did STV address?

The project required delivering a signature bridge on an accelerated schedule to meet the university’s goal of opening before the academic year began. The crossing also needed to reflect campus identity while navigating a constrained site along a high‑volume state highway. The team worked to minimize disruption to the surrounding community and coordinate with the bridge manufacturer to ensure precise installation.

What solutions did STV deliver?

STV designed the pedestrian bridge and its architectural features, including twin brick approach towers topped with signature blue canopies and SC State’s circular garnet‑red logos. The firm provided civil, structural, geotechnical and landscape architecture services, and led project management to keep the $4.2 million effort on schedule. Close collaboration with the manufacturer ensured the prefabricated span was installed safely and efficiently.

How does this project benefit the community?

The new bridge provides a safe, grade‑separated connection between student housing and the heart of campus. It enhances walkability, elevates campus identity and offers a welcoming visual gateway for students, families and visitors.
