First constructed in the 1960s and positioned next to a bus rapid transit station, the Richmond Intermodal Center serves as a prominent gateway to the City of Richmond, California. To elevate the commuter experience and strengthen the station’s role within the community, the West Contra Costa Transportation Advisory Committee engaged STV to develop a comprehensive, phased improvement plan.
What challenges did STV address?
The existing station infrastructure no longer met the needs of a growing commuter population. Weather exposure, outdated amenities, and limited safety features created barriers to a comfortable, reliable travel experience. STV was tasked with creating solutions that improved day-to-day usability while setting the stage for future civic investment and enhanced security in the surrounding transit village.
What solutions did STV deliver?
STV’s phased approach introduced a new canopy shelter and wind-screened waiting area, offering improved protection from inclement weather and enhancing comfort for riders. Looking ahead, STV integrated long‑term architectural concepts that aligned with local economic development, including planning for a future police substation to strengthen public safety and support a more vibrant station environment.
How does this project benefit the region?
The improvements help revitalize Richmond’s downtown, promote safe and convenient railroad travel, and encourage greater multimodal connectivity. By delivering durable, community-focused upgrades, the project supports long-term economic growth and enhances the overall commuter experience.
