To meet rising ridership demands and replace aging rolling stock, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority procured 120 Silverliner V electric multiple‑unit rail cars –the first new regional rail vehicles introduced to the fleet in more than 30 years. STV supported the full procurement effort by providing administrative, engineering, quality assurance and technical oversight services, helping SEPTA introduce a new generation of modern, efficient and rider‑focused rail cars.
What challenges did STV address?
SEPTA needed to upgrade a decades‑old fleet while ensuring the new vehicles met stringent technical, operational and safety requirements. Managing deviations from specifications, resolving work orders, mitigating claims and integrating modern digital systems required close coordination with the car builder and SEPTA staff throughout design, testing and delivery. The modernization also had to enhance comfort and accessibility for a growing and diverse ridership base.
What solutions did STV deliver?
STV provided program management support, including documentation, reporting, warranty tracking and car history books. The team reviewed technical changes, monitored compliance, supported issue resolution and performed inspections throughout manufacturing. STV verified that the new cars incorporated enhanced amenities such as wider aisles, improved seating layouts, larger windows, interior and exterior digital display panels and energy‑efficient climate control systems.
How does this project benefit the community?
The Silverliner V fleet delivers a more comfortable, reliable and technologically advanced rail experience for commuters across the Philadelphia region. Modern amenities, digital communication tools and improved accessibility features support a smoother, safer and more sustainable journey for thousands of daily riders.
