Stockton Southern Pacific Depot Historic Restoration

Originally built in 1930 in the Mediterranean Italianate style and later left dormant for nearly three decades, the Stockton Southern Pacific Depot was revitalized by STV into the Robert J. Cabral Station – a modern, multimodal transit hub that respects its architectural heritage while supporting Amtrak, Altamont Commuter Express, Greyhound Bus and local service.

What challenges did STV overcome?

Bringing a long-abandoned historic structure back to life required striking a balance between preservation and modern functionality. STV navigated deferred maintenance, structural degradation, and code modernization – including seismic reinforcement and ADA upgrades – while carefully retaining character elements such as arched windows, decorative moldings and interior finishes.

What solutions did STV deliver?

STV provided full design and construction administration services that honored the depot’s original design while accommodating modern rail operations. The team restored the two-story waiting room with marble flooring, chandeliers and gilded capitals, rebuilt ticketing, baggage and administrative spaces, implemented seismic upgrades and designed track and platform modifications to support intermodal connectivity.

How does the restored depot benefit the Stockton region?

The revitalized Cabral Station strengthens Stockton’s role as a regional transit node. It enables seamless transfers between commuter rail, intercity rail, buses and local transit, enhances downtown identity, and preserves a historic landmark while providing modern mobility infrastructure for current and future riders.
