Virginia Amtrak Stations Condition Assessments and Needs Analysis

STV, as a subconsultant to Michael Baker International, performed condition and need assessments for 20 Amtrak stations in Virginia, on behalf of the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT). In order to provide a consistent positive customer experience, as well as address long-term capacity needs, DRPT developed a standard method to assess passenger rail station requirements across Virginia.

For the task, STV’s team broke each station into major components that were assessed: street/urban interface, enclosed buildings, grounds (i.e. parking lots and landscaping), canopies, platforms and track, yard and servicing facilities. From there, these elements were examined for any rehabilitation needs. The team also identified and categorized future needs, developed cost estimates, and assembled several resources about each station for DRPT, including one-page information sheets, executive summaries, needs reports and a GIS database.
