Virginia Amtrak Stations Condition Assessments and Needs Analysis

To provide a consistent positive customer experience and address long-term capacity needs, the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) developed a standard method to assess passenger rail station requirements across Virginia. On behalf of DRPT, STV, as a subconsultant, performed condition and need assessments for 20 Amtrak stations in Virginia.

STV’s team assessed each station by separate major components including street/urban interface, enclosed buildings, grounds (i.e. parking lots and landscaping), canopies, platforms and track, yard and servicing facilities. From there, these elements were examined for any rehabilitation needs. The team also identified and categorized future needs, developed cost estimates, and assembled several resources about each station for DRPT, including one-page information sheets, executive summaries, needs reports and a GIS database.
