I‑85 between Charlotte and Greensboro has long been one of North Carolina’s most congested and strategically important corridors. As part of the larger I‑85 Corridor Improvements program, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) advanced a major reconstruction effort to improve safety and capacity, awarding the $136‑million design‑build contract to the Flatiron‑Lane joint venture for the construction of two new bridges over the Yadkin River. These structures serve as a critical link in enhancing highway, bridge and rail infrastructure along this heavily traveled segment.
What challenges did STV address?
The previous crossing faced increasing structural limitations, operational bottlenecks and safety concerns as regional traffic demands surged. The bridge needed to cross a complex environment – including wetlands, a major river and multiple active railroad tracks – requiring an approach that balanced constructability with long-term performance. Coordinating design across highway and rail systems added further complexity.
What solutions did STV deliver?
As the lead designer for the Flatiron‑Lane team, STV provided project management, structural and bridge design and railroad coordination. The resulting dual bridges span 2,914 feet and are 72 feet wide, carrying eight lanes over the Yadkin River, adjoining wetlands and three railroad tracks. STV’s integrated design approach helped facilitate widening three miles of I‑85 while facilitating more seamless connections across the broader corridor improvements.
How does this project benefit the region?
The new Yadkin River Veterans Memorial Bridge improves safety, enhances mobility and reduces congestion along one of North Carolina’s most vital commercial and commuter routes. The effort strengthens regional connectivity, supports economic development and delivers a resilient structure designed to serve the state for decades.
