STV’s Director of Sustainable Design Lauren Alger, P.E., ENV SP, was named an outstanding woman in construction by the Professional Women in Construction New York Chapter (PWC NY). The organization recognized Alger’s leadership in sustainable design as part of its 2023 20 under 40 program, which celebrates women who are excelling in their careers in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry.
“I am so honored to be included in PWC NY’s 20 under 40 program,” Alger said. “STV’s sustainability and resilience teams, both currently led by women, are coordinating efforts across STV to evaluate design considerations and promote sustainable and resilient practices within communities across the country. Many colleagues and mentors are equally passionate about reducing adverse environmental impacts associated with design and construction efforts. I’m grateful for our teams at STV and for organizations like PWC NY that support women throughout the industry.”
Alger is a sought-after expert in sustainable infrastructure design. She is a part of the multidisciplinary team that developed STV’s new Embodied Carbon Action Plan. This plan is the first step in fulfilling the firm’s Structural Engineers 2050 Commitment (SE 2050), which will include specialized training for staff to reduce embodied carbon within structural building designs, and data tracking and analysis through STV’s Carbon Dashboard.
A dedicated leader in infrastructure decarbonization efforts, Alger is a key member of the SE 2050 Commitment and chair of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Infrastructure 2050 group. She has also been invited to attend the Grainger Foundation Frontiers of Engineering Symposium and has delivered presentations at other prestigious events, including NJ TransAction Conference, NYC DEP Earth Week, Transportation Research Board Summer Workshop, APTA Sustainability Workshop, Verdical Group Net Zero Conference, ASHRAE Decarbonization Conference, and ASCE INSPIRE Conference. She is also an advisor for two research groups at Columbia University’s Center for Buildings, Infrastructure, and Public Spaces (CBIPS) who are delving into embodied carbon within infrastructure designs. Most recently, Alger was named a Next Generation leader by the Women Builder’s Council.
Founded in 1980, PWC supports career advancement and diversity within the AEC industry. PWC’s membership is open to professional women and men, private companies and public agencies in construction and allied industries. STV has been a long-standing supporter and sponsor of the organization for years. PWC NY will celebrate Alger and her fellow 20 under 40 recipients at its annual event in December.
