Expanded Corridor Provides Alternate Route with Increased Capacity and Improved Service

CHARLOTTE, NC – STV, a leading professional services firm that plans, designs and manages infrastructure projects across North America, recently celebrated the completion of the downtown main street improvement project in Huntersville, North Carolina. Located approximately 20 minutes north of Charlotte, the project included roadway and intersection improvements to widen the 1.3-mile Main Street corridor from one to two lanes, as well as utility upgrades, extensive water and sewer improvements and the addition of sidewalks.

STV led the construction engineering and inspection (CEI) services, overseeing the construction contract, checking roadway construction activities, testing materials and coordinating with Charlotte Water and Norfolk Southern Railway, which owns the nearby right-of-way. STV also helped the Town of Huntersville navigate potential utility conflicts involving dozens of utility companies that affected more than 120 different parcels.

“We are excited to partner with the Town of Huntersville to deliver another impactful project in North Carolina,” said Jerry Stump, P.E., president of the transportation south central group at STV. “The Main Street improvements will improve traffic flow and safety for school families and students as well as improve the pedestrian and bicycle experience.”

The improvements provide an estimated 25% to 30% greater capacity, improved intersection and mobility operations and will help to catalyze the redevelopment of Huntersville’s historic downtown business district. Before the project, traffic volumes on Old Statesville Road (NC 115) in Huntersville peaked during the morning and afternoon rush hours due to its proximity to the Lake Norman Charter School campus. To provide additional capacity and create a much-needed alternative north/south route to NC 115, the Town undertook a phased, $18 million reconstruction program.

STV has a long history of providing engineering and construction management services in the Charlotte Metropolitan area. The firm designed the new water sanitary sewer system at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT Airport) to facilitate the ongoing airport expansion, which won a prestigious Grand Award for Engineering Excellence from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of North Carolina in 2021. STV’s role in the design and construction of improvements for the Little Sugar Creek Tributary to Fairview Road Sanitary Sewer garnered an Honor Award from the North Carolina Chapter of the ACEC in the Engineering Excellence Awards program. STV is also the trusted team behind many of the new highways and transit systems in Charlotte including the I-485/I-85 Turbine Interchange Design-Build, I-85 over the Yadkin River  and the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) multi-modal facilities including the LYNX Blue Line.
