For more than a century, the Fredericksburg Rail Station has served as a critical passenger hub for commuters and intercity travelers in northern Virginia. Today, it supports Virginia Railway Express (VRE) operations and remains an important stop for Amtrak service. To restore aging infrastructure and improve the rider experience, STV provided design and construction management services for a comprehensive station rehabilitation. The upgrades enhance access, safety and convenience while honoring the station’s historic character.
What challenges did STV address?
Much of the station’s infrastructure had deteriorated after decades of use. Elevated platforms, CSX Transportation bridges serving freight and passenger lines and pedestrian access routes required upgrades to meet modern standards. Enhancing accessibility while respecting historic aesthetics also required close coordination with VRE and other project stakeholders.
What solutions did STV deliver?
STV designed platform repairs and upgrades, extended platforms by roughly 125 feet to improve boarding, added new stairs providing direct access to adjacent parking and enhanced station lighting, sidewalks and signage. The team also delivered accessibility improvements to the west‑side elevator and oversaw structural repairs to freight and passenger rail bridges. All improvements were designed to preserve the original architectural character of the station.
