Fredericksburg Station Rehabilitation

The Fredericksburg Rail Station in Fredericksburg, VA, has been serving the community for more than 100 years and currently functions as a key terminus for commuters using the Virginia Railway Express (VRE) while also serving as a designated stop for Amtrak service. STV provided design and construction management services for the station’s rehabilitation, which included repairs and upgrades to existing elevated platforms and to the CSX Transportation bridges that carry freight and passenger rail traffic over nearby roadways. The project also encompassed lengthening existing platforms by approximately 125 feet to better accommodate loading and unloading of passengers; installing new stairs to provide a direct path from each platform to an adjacent parking; adding new signage, sidewalks and lighting to the facility; and accessibility improvements to the west-side elevator.

A key focus of the program was making sure the upgrades honored the station’s historic design. To that end, VRE was awarded a 2024 Preservation Spark Award from the Fredericksburg Foundation, Inc. for the conservation and sensitive rehabilitation of the station’s infrastructure.

Rail station rehabilitation program pays homage to history while providing improvements that enhance convenience and accessibility.
