STV provided final design and engineering services for the replacement of a section of the McCoys Creek Pedestrian Bridge along Jacksonville’s Northbank Riverwalk. The project, delivered under a City of Jacksonville task order, replaced an existing four-span Riverwalk bridge segment with a new three-span pedestrian structure designed to accommodate McCoys Creek’s realigned outfall into the St. Johns River. The bridge plays a crucial role in maintaining continuous pedestrian access along the Riverwalk and supports a broader creek restoration and flood mitigation effort.
What challenges did STV address?
As part of a major flood-reduction and creek-restoration initiative, McCoys Creek was widened and reconnected to the St. Johns River. This realignment altered the waterway’s geometry and required modifying the existing pedestrian crossing to safely span the expanded channel. Maintaining uninterrupted Riverwalk access during this transformation was a key project need.
What solutions did STV deliver?
STV led the final design and engineering for the pedestrian bridge replacement, preparing plans, specifications and bid documents to support construction. The firm designed a new three‑span structure to replace the former four‑span crossing and coordinated with geotechnical consultants on the design of new deep foundations using micropiles. STV also provided support through the bidding and construction phases.
How will this project benefit Jacksonville and the surrounding region?
The new bridge preserves a continuous riverfront pedestrian connection while accommodating the creek’s realignment. It enhances downtown connectivity and supports Jacksonville’s expanding Riverwalk and Emerald Trail networks, aligning infrastructure improvements with long-term resilience and flood-mitigation goals. Beyond its mobility function, the bridge contributes to a revitalized public realm along the Northbank Riverwalk, supporting the City of Jacksonville’s placemaking vision for McCoys Creek and complementing public art, murals and landscape enhancements introduced as part of the broader restoration effort.
